Nova Scotia
One of Canada’s thirteen provinces, Nova Scotia (/nov sko/ NOH-v SKOH-sh; French: Nouvelle-Écosse; Scottish Gaelic: Alba Nuadh) is pronounced /nov sko/ NOH-v SKOH-sh. There are three Maritime and four Atlantic provinces, of which Nova Scotia is one. New Scotland is the Latin translation of Nova Scotia.
According to the 2021 Census, the province’s population is 969,383, and most residents are native English speakers, Canada’s most populous Atlantic province. Its total land area of 55,284 square kilometres (21,345 square miles) includes Cape Breton Island and 3,800 more coastal islands.
